Hilltop Nursing Home was begun in 1956 by
Shelley and Rowena Dunn. The original nursing home was in a three
story apartment building, previously used as a hospital under Dr. Dyers’
care. As tenants came and went, the
long term tenants came to be some elderly gentlemen who had no one to take
care of them. Mrs. Dunn began to
prepare meals for them and gradually took on more and more responsibility for
their care. Mrs. Dunn soon realized
that she needed help and some of the first employees were hired and Hilltop
Nursing Home began. In the 1960’s the first part of the new
nursing home was built. Mrs. Dunn was
her own first patient in the new building.
Shortly before the scheduled opening, she slipped on a patch of ice,
fell, and broke her hip. In the 1980’s, Hilltop Nursing Home
expanded and became a corporation.
After Mrs. Dunn’s death on August 8, 1989, the stock of the
corporation was divided among her heirs. In 2003, James J. and Rose Marie Gray (her
eldest granddaughter) purchased the other shareholders stock and became the
sole owners. They have operated the
nursing home since then and strive to carry on the family tradition that is
so important. |
